A Conversation

Before you read the conversation, let me begin by coming clean that I have brainwashed my child into thinking I am 27.

Seriously.

Ask him how old his Mom is and he will tell you 27.  In fact, he stood so firm to this idea to my Dad and Brother once that my Brother later came to me to talk about Luke's lying problem.

I really see no harm in it.  I could pass for 27, right???

Luke:  Mom, how old are you?  Really.

Me:  34.

Luke:  Wow.  That is just......just, soooooo hard to believe!

Me:  Because I look so young and all?

Luke:  YES!  And how old is Dad?

Me:  34.  But he just turned 34 and I will be 35 soon.  I am really six months older than him.

Luke:  Wow.  That is hard to believe too.

Me:  What is it about Dad that makes him seem older?

Luke:  It’s his beard and mustache.

Me:  I see.  And what is it about me that makes me seem younger?

Luke:  It is just you!!  You seem so much younger.  AND your hair!  Like when you wear it in a ponytail, but mostly when you wear it in the two braids.  That REALLY makes you look young.

I love that kid!  Tomorrow will be a two braid kind of day for sure and I just might do it for the rest of my life!

Happy Friday!

My Boy

Those blue eyes put a smile on my face.
You wish they could look into outer space.

The freckles sprinkled on your nose remind me that you’re not a baby anymore.
One day I’ll miss your toys covering the floor.

You love to read, watch movies, and you are a thinker.
But truth be told, you are also a stinker.

You make your Momma laugh every day
With your jokes, stories, and games you play.

You are happy and filled with such joy.
I could not be more thankful that you are my boy.

I love you.

Sweet Sunday with my Sweetie

Joshua went to the Cowboy game on Sunday with is friend and there was a bit of a breakdown in communication and Luke did not get to go. Luke was upset for a bit, but then was excited that it would be a Lukey/Mommy Sunday.

We went to church and then had a great lunch date eating pizza! After lunch we went over to Blockbuster to rent a movie. And I guess it has been ages since I went with Luke to rent a movie, because I was HIGHLY disappointed in the movie selection! The Stewarts will now be moving into the new age and will be getting Netflix – yay! We were finally able to find a movie and went on home.

We grabbed Hank and the three of us snuggled up on the couch and watch Marmaduke! And let me tell you, that movie is HI-larious! We laughed and laughed. About five minutes into the movie Luke looked over at me and said, “Mom, if you close your eyes, it almost sounds like Marmaduke is Lightening McQueen when talking.” This boy cracks me up. I knew Owen Wilson did the voice for both, but I had not really thought anything about it since my brain is not thinking CARS 20/7 like Luke’s!

After the movie we decided to make some treats. We both agreed that anything dipped in chocolate and then dunked into sprinkles would be great, and we choose marshmallows!

Dipping things in chocolate with Luke can be tricky, you have to constantly keep an eye on him or he will locate a straw and just start sucking down melted chocolate. I have never met anyone who loves chocolate as much as him!

In true Luke fashion, as soon as we were done, he located the first marshmallow that was done and said, “Surely this one is cooled off and I can eat it!!” No mother can say no to that, so he began to eat away.

And of course Luke had to do one just in chocolate.  And he swirled it real good.

These were a yummy treat and oh so easy to make!  And I think they turned out so cute.

Luke and I loved our Sweet Sunday together!

Being a Mother

I will be honest and say that prior to having Luke, when I would think about having children, I very rarely thought about any of the not-so-fun-things of parenting. I knew those times would be there, but I chose not to think of them.

Luke is now six. I’ve had a lot of the not-so-fun-times. However, up until last weekend, I had not actually been the cause of those times. At least I do not think I have.

Last Saturday we arrived at Luke’s t-ball game and I got out of the truck, and slammed the door shut. I had not realized Luke’s hand was in the door. Not until Josh screamed at me to open the door did I realize this.

Once I realized what I had done, my first thought was of course about Luke. Had I broken his fingers? After his many, many tears stopped, Josh was able to determine that his fingers were not broke. He actually played in his t-ball game. His fingers never swelled up, and no bruising occurred.

There is really no explanation to the fact that he has no lasting marks, other than a miracle --a miracle in which I have thanked God for that day and every day since.

That night, I crawled into bed with Luke after he went to sleep and I laid there and looked at him and cried. I cried thinking that my not paying attention could have seriously injured my child. I cried because I was so thankful that he was okay.

Monday when I picked Luke up from my Dad’s I gave him a hug, kiss, and then asked to see his hand. After inspecting it for the millionth time, I again, for the millionth time, told him how sorry I was for shutting his hand in the door.

Luke’s response, “It’s okay Mom. I have forgotten about it and I wish you would too.”

That sentence is so encompassing of the mother/child relationship. This boy could not care less what I had done to him. He has forgotten and loves me no less.

While there are many hard and no-so-fun-things about being a parent, those sure are few and far between compared to the good and loving times.

This week, leading up to Mother’s day, I am so thankful that God allowed me to be a Mother. The journey to having a child was not easy, and did not come without tears, but it came.

Thank you God for my Luke and for entrusting him to me….even knowing that I would one day shut his hand in a truck door.

A Letter and a Gift

Ordinarily, I would not post anything regarding Luke getting in trouble; however, tonight will be different. I will.

Luke woke up this morning and to say he was in a bad mood is an understatement. He not only began speaking ugly words to me, but was talking with such a terrible attitude. I simply looked at him and told him I was not dealing with him since he was acting so ugly and I walked off. I finished getting ready for work and then gave Luke a hug and kiss good-bye and told him that I hoped he had a good day.

Once I left the house, I never thought again about the way Luke had acted. Luke, on the other hand thought about it all day.

When I picked him up from school I asked how his day was, he replied that it was a great day and he had something for me.

And he handed me this.

I have the sweetest boy.

I told him thank you so much and that I forgave him for acting badly. He explained that he wrote the letter on his own and it was his idea to do so. He then went on to say that he had a present for me, but that he had to put it together.

There was some commotion going on in the back seat, and then he reached up to the front of the car and handed me this.

(ps-he took this picture himself)

Tears welled up in my eyes.

I looked back at him and he was beaming.
He taped a keychain ring to the back of this lovely star.
I asked him where the roll of tape came from and he told me that he took everything to school that he needed to make the note and ring.

He then said that his note to me had clues….he wanted us to go on a walk and play a game of SORRY since he was very SORRY for how he acted.

I could not have been more proud of him. My stubborn little boy not only realized he was wrong, but apologized in the sweetest way he knew how.

Silly Sunday

Hi Luke.
Hi Momma.  What are ya doing?
Taking pictures.

Okay.  Get this!
You look kind of weird.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
I don't want to look weird, Momma!

FINE!  You are not weird.  You are cute.
Thank you, Momma.
You are welcome, Luke.

Here's my tonge!!!  And look, bug eyes!
SEE!  Weird.

I. AM. NOT. WEIRD.

YES.  YOU.  ARE.  But, it's okay.  I will keep you anyway.
Thank you, Momma.  I love you.
I love you too.

Hey, Luke, you moved!  Why did you move over there?  And it looks like you left your light on down the hall.  Go turn it off.

Okay, Bye!
Bye.

Songs

My Luke has starting making up songs. A lot. He will belt them out from just about anywhere at any time.

The other night he was in the bathroom and I was across the hall in his bedroom. This is what I heard.

My mom is 99. My mom is 99.

Here is the deal. My son is fully aware, at the age of six that his mother does not like to discuss her age. However, he is like his Daddy and thinks he is funny when he does these types of things to me.

I did not say a word to him. I just turned around and gave him the evil eye. They eye that says, “If you do not stop singing that song right this minute, I will…..I will…….Well, you don’t even want to know what I will do!!”

It scared him. A lot. So he changed his words.

My mom is 100. My mom is 100.

Clearly the threat of bodily harm is not the way to my son’s heart. So, I walked into the bathroom, looked into his big blue eyes and sang a little song of my own.

Someone’s not getting birthday presents. Someone’s not getting birthday presents.

He smiled. He laughed.

I smiled. I laughed. I was not kidding.

And he knew it.

My mom is 26. My mom is 26.

He may be a little stubborn, but he is a smart one.

I think I will keep him.

Teachable Moment

This week Luke was able to check out a book at the library and he was SO happy! The book he brought home was Silly Billy. I immediately laughed since this is my Dad’s name and could not wait to read the book.

As Luke snuggled into bed we opened the book and began to read. Billy was a worrier. Well, I know how Billy feels, so am I. He worried about all kinds of silly things and his Grandma told him they were not really silly (although really they were) and so she gave him worry dolls. Instead of lying in bed worrying, he was to tell the dolls what he was worrying about and then was able to sleep.
Cute book.
As we were reading the book I knew that once it was over, I needed to talk to Luke about what we should really do when we worry. Teachable moment at my door. So when finished I asked him what we were to do when we worried. He said just forget about it and go to bed. This is his father in him and I love it. I said that was good, but that we should also pray and give our worries to God.
Then I realized, this teachable moment was not really for Luke, it was a reminder for me. I have gotten so much better about my worrying, but I have let something slip up on me. I have been worrying about it for a while now and I have not even told anyone. But God knows even when no one else does. And He is so gracious to remind us of it when needed.
After Luke said his prayers and I walked out of his room, I prayed and gave my worry to God. I also knew I would have to continually give this worry to God, but that it was okay. The next morning I could not stop thinking about that book. In a library filled with who knows how many thousands of books, my child pick out this one and brought it home. I love that God choose my son to remind me of His.
Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. John 14:1
